Ow... That was the first coherent thought that Jade could remember having as she stirred. All over ached horribly but it was her head that hurt the most. God... How long had she been out for? It felt like years really but that wasn't possible, it was just her over-active imagination at work. Jade hadn't felt this much pain since she had tried riding that electric bull at the fair when she had been fourteen years old. What a horrible mistake that had been. Where was she? How did she get there?
Why did she feel as though she had been trampled by elephants and then placed in a car-cruncher? Again, a little overdramatic and yet considering the situation, oddly appropriate as well. First it was best to assess her current situation and go from there. Sitting up in what appeared to be a cage, Jade’s heart seemed to drop in her stomach as she came to realize where she was. She was in a cage in the Trading Rings… She was to be bought as a slave.
It was all coming back to her now. The attack on her home. The death of her father by her own hand. Topher… Oh god, had he escaped? She didn’t know damnit and that terrified her beyond all belief. She had given herself up in order to keep them from discovering her younger brother but she didn’t know if that had worked or not. Had the vampires left after getting Jade or had they further searched? Jade couldn’t remember because not long after she had given herself up, she had been knocked out which easily explained the pounding migraine she had when she woke up and the nice sized bump on the back of her head. Jade almost felt sick from the pain and the dizziness as well as the realization of what was possibly going to happen to her. It wasn’t unreal, humans were caught and sold as slaves for a long time but for some reason Jade had never figured such a fate would happen to her.
She had been foolish and cocky in her own skills. It was her own fault that she was in the predicament that she was in now and what scared her most was she had no way of getting out of it. She was scared. Jade hated to admit it but she was scared half to death.
She wasn’t made to be a slave. She was a fighter, someone who would fight tooth n nail to be free no matter what pain she’d have to endure. Well, she figured that now mainly because she had never been put through torture or anything like that. There was no telling what she would do but she liked to think that she would stay strong. Jade’s heart was racing as she glanced around, taking in the sights and sounds of the one place she had never hoped to see in her short lifetime. It was horribly morbid really.
There were various species of masters walking around and inspecting those captive closely as though they were nothing more than a piece of meat or an item that had no real value. It wasn’t just humans that were being sold; there were other species as well from what Jade could tell. Interesting, Jade had only thought humans were sold off as slaves but apparently she was wrong. Not that this was a comforting thought because it wasn’t. She was in a fuckin slave market! With no way of escape from what she could tell. She was human, she had no fancy powers that would help her escape but then again, maybe her being human was a good thing. She had nothing fancy about her so there was nothing hopefully to draw attention to her either. She really hoped that was the case because she’d rather die than be a slave to anyone.
Solid bars. Locked door. No chains on her but there was no reason to chain her either. She was unable to get out unless she was let out and even then she doubted she could make a run for it. Too many around for that to happen. No way of formulating a plan of action since Jade had no idea how things went around here and how long she’d be there. She could be there for days or hours, it depended on whether someone found her to be interesting. She really hoped no one did. Would she be fed while she was in the cage? Jade hoped so since it felt like it had been weeks since she had last eaten.
Taking a seat on the ground of the cage, her back up against the bars, Jade took a moment to try and get her bearings. It wasn’t easy, that was for damn sure but she couldn’t break. She had to be strong. Had to see what happened before she decided to panic. If anything, she could be glad that she didn’t hear or see her younger brother in any of the cages because that would just about kill Jade if she did. She had given up her own safety for him. Not that she resented it because she didn’t and she’d do it again in a heartbeart if she had to. No hesitation at all. Audric needed a new project. There was a lull in clientele which was usually caused by a lack in customer satisfaction. Give the customers what they want and they will be happy. Audric was searching for that special raw material that he could transform into something brilliant, smart and marketable. Besides, he was hungry. A trip to the slave market was the perfect medicine to cure both.
Most of the wares offered at the market were usually uneducated, ill-bred, sickly, starved, untrained or a combination of the above. Unfortunately for the traders, this caused their merchandise to lose most of its potential value. On the other hand, this little detail kept Audric in business. Much like a used car salesmen, he picked up undesirable low price slaves at the market who were in a fixable condition or from traders who were unaware of the real value. Audric would put the slaves through an intense training program, sell them to high market clients and viola: profit.
Occasionally if he found a particularly rare species he would add the purchase to the company’s breeding program. But this was less hands on and he preferred to delegate that part of the business to his father. Overall, the company was very profitable and allowed him and his father to live quite comfortably. On the other hand, it still depended upon the quality of the goods produced thus leading Audric into the trading rings today. Perhaps he would find someone worthwhile.
Searching for potential slaves was like trying to find the real Rolex in a box of fakes: Possible, but time consuming. Each specimen had to be carefully examined and nine times out of ten it wasn’t the right one. Not being the most patient vampire in the world, Audric didn’t particularly favor this part of the process. Perseverance (and cash) won out however and he slowly moved from cage to cage making sure not to miss anything.
Before he realized it Audric ended up in the human section. Humans were notorious for being the cheapest wares in the trading rings but he believed they were unjustly undervalued. Their lack of strength or other senses compared to demons or shifters made them seem useless to most but he saw it differently. They made excellent housekeepers, child-care providers or even in-home nurses. With the proper training and equipment humans could even become useful daytime bodyguards for a vampire or other night-dwelling creature. And one could never forget the potential profit in selling an educated, cultured and polite “entertainer” or “escort.”
All of these potential occupations required skill. And thus, Audirc was able to turn a rock into a gemstone. Of course it wasn’t ALL about the money. His “temporary slaves” as he liked to call them offered a changing variety of meal choices to the work obsessed vampire. Once the slaves were healthy, a little blood here and there wouldn’t hurt them or his profit. In fact, it often got them accustomed to donating blood which was a fine selling point when the potential buyer was a vampire.
Most of the slaves he passed were too far gone mentally to survive even his reviving therapy. Audric was no psychologist. Though he could sense the emotions of those he touched, he wasn’t trained in fixing the mind of individuals. A little pep talk here and there sure, but by no means was he a professional.
And then…someone caught his eye. It was a human girl a few cages down. Young, strong, almost starved to death but the potential was definitely there. Her back was against the bars but neither her body nor her mind seemed defeated, at least from a distance. There was a certain resilience about her which made him curious.
Audric closed the distance between them and peered in. He would test his theory. “What do you say about becomming my slave?” he spoke in a confident, almost smug tone.

Needless to say, watching other people getting poked and prodded at by other species was not the most settling for Jade who was in a similar situation with next to no hope of actually getting out. Never had Jade ever thought that she would land herself into this, she had always assumed that if she was careful and was able to handle herself that she’d stay safe, stay free. But then again, life never really played out the way you thought it would. Who could have known that humanity would have fallen so low on the rung of superiority. God damnit, stupid f*cking creatures. Vampires… They were the ones who had put her in this predicament in the first place, attacking her home and making it so that she had no other option but to surrender. A quick check over showed no real signs of damage aside from the huge bump on the back of her head.
No bite marks or any signs that they had done anything other than carried her to the Trading Rings and dumping her butt into the cage. A real relief considering finding blood would have caused her to panic even more than she already was, that and the sight and scent of blood would possibly attract more creatures to her cage and she didn’t need or want that.
How was she going to get out of this? While it hurt a little, Jade couldn’t help but lightly rock back and forth in her cage, causing her back to thunk against the metal bar. There was no special precautions in keeping her in her cage, nothing aside from the cold metal bars and the dozens of things walking around with the possible intent of buying and enslaving her or those unfortunate like her. Not only that but her father… How could she have killed him?! It had been an accident of course but that didn’t change the fact that it had been her and not some vampire.
The axe burrowing in her father’s chest, all because she hadn’t known he had been behind her. Jade wanted to cry at the mere thought of it, tears burned behind her dark brown eyes but she refused to cry now. She didn’t want to seem cowardly and broken. She was strong. She had to be strong to survive or at least that was what she figured. While Jade had never been a slave before, she had met someone who had escaped that kind of life though she wasn’t sure how she had done it. Fay had been found half alive and near delirious some months ago. It had taken some time but her father had been able to nurse the poor young woman back to health and Jade was able to get to know her story a bit.
She was human and had been a slave for about six years to a horrible vampire named Drake. The things he had done to her… They were just unspeakable and the damage was beyond repair in some cases. Every chance she had gotten she had tried to escape and she had fought against him as well which was a double-edged sword in a way really. It meant that she hadn’t broken but it also meant that she remained interesting to him as well. A favourite personal toy that he was determined to break. The stories that Jade had been told were enough to give her nightmares even in her late teens. Such tales were what went through her mind even now. Any vampire there could be a potential Drake in Jade’s mind.
Not just vampires here but that was what Jade most feared. Stay strong. Stay strong. She just had to stay strong and try not to attract anyone’s attention in any sort of way. Her cage had no one guarding it and no one calling attention to it which maybe meant that she wasn’t all that highly valued. Plus she looked as though she had been starving for months so maybe passing creatures would deem her unsavoury and choose someone else. Jade could be hopeful.
So focused on her current thoughts, Jade was unaware that despite her distinct lack of interest to others, someone had noticed her and was making his way over to her cage. It wasn’t until she heard a cultured voice speak from behind her that she turned quickly, backing away from the side of the cage where Audric happened to be. His question was pretentious considering he was asking someone who was used to freedom how she would feel about becoming his slave. Possible vampire or maybe a demon, she wasn’t sure which just yet. Whatever he was, Jade did not want to go with him. He was handsome, she’d give him that much but just because he was attractive didn’t mean he’d make a very good master. “Go f*ck yourself.” She spat at him, keeping her distance as much as she could in the little cage. It wasn’t like she could move around too much and she was rather weak from lack of food. “I won’t be anyone’s slave, least of all yours so just go away.”
Really, it probably wasn’t the best idea to piss off anyone but Jade was a stubborn female dog and she wouldn’t bow to anyone. Maybe her being a difficult slave would lead the handsome vampire to seek someone else out. Tags; Audric Lyrics; Dance With The Devil – Breaking Benjamin Word Count; 902 Outfit; --- Comment; ^^

Yep, this was definitely a feisty one. Audric chuckled as retrieved a handkerchief from him coat pocket and wiped her spit from his face. The vampire had insulted the young lady intentionally, trying to see what sort of reaction he raised from her. His initial hypothesis had been correct; she was certainly spirited and probably never had served as a slave before. Aggressive slaves took much more time and energy to train, but he found that afterwards they were actually better at their work and possessed significantly higher dedication. Her intense passion and rage against authority just needed to be channeled into something productive. Audric was more than willing to help her accomplish this.
He found her inability to accept her new position in life amusing. Even starved and caged she still felt that she had a choice. Unfortunately for her, all of her choices had been taken away the moment she was locked inside her cage by her trader. Whether she was willing to accept it or not, her freedom was no longer hers and the sooner she realized this the better off she would be, especially if she was chosen by someone less experienced at handling new slaves.
He decided his most effective approach would be to simply tell her the truth. Only then would he be able to anticipate her reaction and see if she was truly worth her price tag. “Are you quite sure of your decision? I am a procurer of slaves that I can rehabilitate, train and then resell. I suppose you could call it a half-way house. Compared your current situation, which is rather crude, I would be able to offer you much more sophisticated accommodations. You would have your own bedroom complete with a bed off of the ground, clean clothes, your own bathroom, and, here’s the kicker, three square meals a day.” Audric was careful to pause so that his offer could sink in. “It is far from paradise, but quite the lap of luxury for a slave.”

It was so hard to tell just what to expect from those who approached her cage really. Jade had literally spit at the vampire as she swore at him and yet all she got was a chuckle from the man as he wiped the spittle from his face. Maybe Fay had been right about fighting back actually hurt more than helped when it came to trying to get attention off of you. Audric didn’t stomp away angry at the young woman’s angry words, intent on finding a more docile slave, he remained there with an amused look on his face. Talk about a figurative slap in the face right there. Was he really thinking of buying her? What was he like? Was he a cruel vampire like Fay’s Drake had been or was he more lenient? That’s one thing that was rather maddening as she crouched in the far corner of her cage, glaring at Audric hatefully, she didn’t know anything about this life or what to expect! Being a slave was terrible, no matter how one put it, it was terrible because your rights as human being were all but stolen from you. You were basically nothing more than an animal at a pet shop or something to that affect.
Yeah… her earlier statement was a bit foolish considering that it was obvious that she had no choice whatsoever in what was going to happen to her. The only choice she had was how she chose to handle this new life that had been thrust at her while her old life had been ripped into blood-stained shreds. That didn’t mean she had to accept it. Would probably go bad for her but she wouldn’t bow to anyone whether they held her leash or not. She was a fighter before she had been caged and she would continue to fight against any non-human species that chose to come her way. This was ridiculous, she was a twenty-four year old young woman and yet she felt as though she was a scared little five-year old child.
“Are you quite sure of your decision? I am a procurer of slaves that I can rehabilitate, train and then resell. I suppose you could call it a half-way house. Compared your current situation, which is rather crude, I would be able to offer you much more sophisticated accommodations. You would have your own bedroom complete with a bed off of the ground, clean clothes, your own bathroom, and, here’s the kicker, three square meals a day.” A procurer of slaves? A fuckin half-way house?! What was he saying? Was he actually trying to make slavery sound like an alright thing because if he was than he was failing miserably. There was no way in hell that she would willingly go with any slavery, especially one who obviously made a business out of it. “I’m not some kind of dog you can just train and then resell you bastard.” The whole sophisticated accommodation thing sounded nice but she had no idea whether he was actually telling the truth or not. He could just be saying that so he didn’t have to drag her kicking and screaming home. Or he could be telling the truth but even still, she didn’t want to go with him. “Just leave me alone!” She turned her back on him and hid her face. Jade was trying so hard not to cry but it was not easy, that was for damn sure.
Wake up! This had to be a horrible nightmare, just wake up Jade! She thought to herself as she curled into the corner of her cage, her empty stomach growling pathetically. Three square meals a day… No! Don’t even think about caving and going with the slaver! That was not an option and if he wanted her than he’d have to drag her to his home cause there was no way she was going willingly. And even if she did go, she would try everything she could think of to escape from there. She was no meant to be a slave, she could not be trained to be obedient and polite. She just wasn’t! “I’m not going with you, go find some other slave to train and then resell.” Tags; Audric Lyrics; Dance With The Devil – Breaking Benjamin Word Count; 785 Outfit; --- Comment; ^^

This girl needed to get her head out of the clouds and back down to earth. Slavery has been going on for thousands of years in hundreds of civilizations. It wasn’t the nicest practice but it was by far the most logical, or at least profitable. The employer provides for the workers and the workers do whatever he instructs. It was a give a take sort of relationship. How far secluded had she been during the wars? From the way she was talking you’d think she living under a rock.
Fuckk! This woman was so infuriating! A dog?! So what? Didn’t she see that this was her best chance for survival? It was by far the best prospect she would come across. Did she think she think that if she held out long enough the slaver would just let her go? The situation was positively maddening.
“Fine. I won’t buy you. But someone else will. You should know that most of the pathetic sacks for beings here only buy slaves for three reasons: sexxx, torture, and backbreaking labor. I am willing to give you a chance to stay out of that situation,” he started, speaking rapidly his words sliding together with anger.
“If your goal is to die you are well on your way to achieving it,” he finished. Audric could accept stubbornness. He even encouraged it to a point. But there was no way he was bringing her home with him if he felt like she was going to steak him in his sleep. Even with his new security guard, there was no way he was risking his life quite so plainly for the chance of a profit. Audric valued his life above all else, even if it meant a temporary loss in sales.
“This is your last chance. Stay or go!” she bellowed sharply.
