Save Me From
The Dark
The boy sat in his cage, pushed to the back in the darkest corner of the room. His heart raced as his bright eyes absorbed all light from the moon and projected it, bothering merchants and slaves alike. He'd been crying, his terror overcoming him and causing him to freeze up. His body ached and his eyes burned, he heard growling in the distance, coming up at yhim and causing him to cry out. Several comlplains rang out from other cages and a merchant walked over, pissed at the commotion and hit him across the head. Stars danced in his eyes, his vision going in and ourt of focus. "Hey." A small whisper, barely audible called out from beside him. Looking over he saw a woman, older than him but stgill young. She smiled prettily and scooted to the edge of her cage. "Are you alright?" Though somewhat afraid of the possible threat she posed he nodded.
"My name is Popsicle." She said softly and reached out between the bars of her cage to touch him. Jolting a bit at her touch he relaxed, and just looked at her. "What's your name?" She tried, noting how he hadn't introduced himself. "....n-name?" He said with widened eyes. He didn't have a name. She seemed to notice, and frowned. "Well...if you don't have a name I will name you. You seem rather afraid of the daerk." A small choked whimper escaped him, he gazed down at his hands and nodded quietly. "Well, here." She passed something between them and he looked up, taking the cool object into his hands. "Click the button." He pressed his thumb down on the object, and a lifght illuminated his xcage. Eyes wide he looked at her, amazed by the object before him. "It's a flashlight, it will keep away the dark." Thankful for the object he uttered a small sound of thanks, and she smiled. She put her hand on his wrist and patted him. "I think I'll name you Flashlight."
Looking at her, he smiled widely and nodded. Flashlight. He had a name. An identity, something he could tell people to call him besides "boy." Holding the flashlight close to him all night Popsicle stayed up with him and told him soft quiet stories of the rolling green hills she used to roam and of her previous life, the small cottage on the sand of England and of her two dogs. Her favorite cats Optic and Illuminate. For days he listened to her, and watched over her as she fell asleep. He never realized how truely he loved her as a mother, how much he depended on her stories at night to keep him safe. He never realized this, until she was taken away from him. He'd noticed the cruel eyes looking at her for days, the hungry sneer on the vampire as he'd taken her away. The desparate sorrowful look on her face as she looked at him one last time. He even noticed the trembling of her fingers as she walked away. The one thing he didn't notice for a while though, was how hot the tears were as they fell down his face. That night, the monsters came once again.
